MicroLight Corporation of America is a Texas corporation that acquired rights in 2001 to the ML 830®, a hand-held low-energy laser similar to one developed, manufactured and first marketed in 1985 by a Danish company. Since that time, low-level lasers such as the ML 830® have been sold in more than 20 countries to physicians, physiotherapists, and veterinarians for such things as wound healing, pain reduction and anti-inflammatory indications
MicroLight concentrates on marketing the ML 830® for treating Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, or "CTS." CTS is a repetitive-stress injury that damages tissue and nerves in the hand and arm, resulting from motions that are repeated many times each day (such as operating a computer keyboard, or working on an automobile assembly line). CTS is the most common of a growing number of repetitive-stress injuries that are the leading occupational injuries in the United States, accounting for half of all workplace injuries. Surgical and non-surgical treatments for CTS generally have produced limited success.
In response to the dramatic growth of CTS among its employees, General Motors conducted a controlled 36-week double-blind clinical study using the ML 830® to treat 116 employees who had CTS (under its former designation "MicroLight 830") in conjunction with a physical therapy program. This study showed a significant improvement in grip strength and range of motion among workers treated with the ML 830® when compared to workers treated with a placebo laser. A prominent college of medicine in Houston, Texas, conducted a later double-blind study in 2000. That study showed 70% improvement in the active group.
As a result of FDA market clearance received in early 2002, MicroLight now markets the ML 830® to U.S. medical doctors, physical therapists, hospitals, clinics, occupational therapists, athletic trainers and chiropractors. The company also intends to market the ML 830® to veterinarians to treat horses for check ligament tendonitis, planter desmitis and problem wound healing.
MicroLight intends to engage in additional clinical studies to test the ML 830® for the treatment of a variety of other health problems, including arthritis, tendonitis and sports medicine.
